Alpinia zerumbet aka Shell Ginger
Flowers are produced on old growth, so flowers are usually not seen on plants grown as annuals or stored for the winter. The pearl colour flower buds resemble seashells, giving it its common name. Rhizomes can be dug and stored over the winter. If keeping over the winter, they should be lifted after the first frost and stored in a dry area around 55ºF.
Lighting: Provide bright light. These plants do well with some direct sunshine either in the morning or some filtered sun in the afternoon.
Watering: Allow the top quarter of the soil to dry out before watering. Leaf edges will begin to curl when the plant is thirsty.
Humidity: Higher humidity levels are preferred, 50% and up.
