Vitis vinifera
A vigorous, woody deciduous vine with climbing stems, large lobed leaves, and clusters of small greenish flowers that develop into edible grapes. It needs support to climb and can spread extensively.
Approximate Maximum Height: Up to 15 m
Zone(s): Zones 3-10
Lighting: Full sun is best, ideally 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It can tolerate partial shade but will produce less fruit.
Germination: Seeds benefit from cold stratification for about 2-3 months at 1-5°C (34-41°F). Sow about 1-2 cm deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep the medium consistently moist. Germination may be slow and irregular.
Watering: Keep seeds and young seedlings consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, water deeply when the top few centimetres of soil become dry. Mature vines are moderately drought-tolerant but need additional water during prolonged dry periods, especially when producing fruit.
